Free Knitting Pattern: Ribbed Halter Top for MSD/45cm BJDs

This is a very simple, beginner-friendly project that knits up fairly quickly thanks to the lack of sleeves, but makes for a cute, versatile top with lots of layering potential. It's worked in the round from the bottom up until you reach the underarms, at which point you'll bind off roughly half of your stitches and work the rest of the front and the collar flat.

As simple as it is, this is the first time I've written a knitting pattern that anyone other than myself has to try to follow, so please let me know if any of my instructions are unclear! I'll do my best to clarify. I'll also include more photos at the end of the post, for reference's sake.

Note: this pattern was designed for a doll with a 19cm bust, 12.8cm waist, and 21cm hip measurement. The ribbing makes it fairly stretchy so it'll likely fit other similarly-sized dolls well, but you may need to make adjustments depending on your doll's proportions.

You will need:

  •  a set of 2mm DPNs
  • 1.5mm knitting needles (optional)*
  • a small amount of fingering weight yarn
  • a tapestry needle
  • a small snap

*I only used the 1.5mm needles to knit the collar, because I prefer the look of my 1x1 ribbing when done on smaller needles. If you don't have or would prefer not to use 1.5mm needles, I don't think it will make a meaningful difference to the project.

Cast on 63 sts. Distribute stitches evenly across DPNs and join to knit in round.

Work *k2, p1* ribbing to end of round. Continue in pattern until piece measures 9cm from cast-on edge, or until desired length.

Work 32 sts in pattern. Bind off remaining 31 sts. From now on you will be working flat.

Row 1(RS): slip 1, ssk, work in pattern to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 (30 sts)

Row 2 (WS): slip 1, work in pattern to end of row

Row 3: slip 1, knit 1, ssk, work in pattern to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2 (28 sts)

Row 4: slip 1, work in pattern until end of row

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 15 stitches, ending on a wrong side row. If you are using 1.5mm needles, switch to them now.

Cast on 12 stitches. Knit 4, *k1, p1* to end of row. Turn work.

Cast on 12 sts. Knit 4, *p1, k1* to last 4 sts, knit 4.

Continue in pattern, working first and last four stitches of in garter stitch and the rest of the row in ribbing, for 5 more rows.

Bind off all stitches. Weave in ends and block as desired. Sew a small snap to the garter stitch border at either end of the collar.

And that's it! If you prefer, you could work a yarnover into the border of the collar for a buttonhole and use a button for the closure, but I find snaps are easier to manage on this scale.

Here are some additional photos of the view from the back and what the piece looks like laid flat:

Please feel free to make modifications to this pattern as desired. Credit is not necessary, but if you do make something using it, I'd love to see! This one is pretty simple, but I may try to tidy up and post other patterns I've designed in the future. If that's something anyone has any interest in, please let me know!
